Clarifying Coating Confusion! Electroplating - also called electrogalvanizing - is most often confused with hot-dip galvanizing. Both methods provide corrosion protection, but the application of the coating and performance of the finish are different. Galvanizing is a general term referring to the application of a zinc coating applied to steel for the purpose of corrosion prevention. It encompasses a variety of processing methods including Electroplating. Other galvanizing methods include Hot-Dip Galvanizing, Thermal Spray and Mechanical Plating. These are all methods for the application of an industrial zinc coating, but the procedures used, and characteristics of the final finish can vary greatly. When zinc plating is exposed to heat, humidity and moisture, the finish does what it is meant to do by sacrificing itself to protect the metal. This can appear as white powder on the parts' surface. To help prevent this during summer- when heat and humidity levels are high- avoid leaving parts sealed-up in crates or containers for long periods of time. Finished parts should be stored to allow adequate airflow around each part. This will enable parts to dry if they are exposed to moisture.
